Fleece Bomber Jackets

Design Elements:

1. Structural Ribbing

• Heavyweight Rib-Knit: Use a high-density cotton/spandex rib for the collar, cuffs, and hem. This provides the “snapped” silhouette typical of bomber jackets and prevents the fleece from sagging.

• Contrast Tipping: Adding a subtle line or “tipping” in a different color on the ribs can give it a more premium, varsity feel.

2. Functional Pocketing

• MA-1 Utility Sleeve Pocket: A hallmark of this style is the zippered “pencil pocket” on the left sleeve. In a fleece version, this is often done with a nylon overlay to handle the weight of the zipper.

• Welt Pockets with Snap Closure: Deep front pockets with a reinforced welt (the fabric border). Adding a hidden snap button keeps the pockets clean and functional.

3. Modern Fastening

• Antique Brass or Matte Black Zippers: Since the fleece is soft, a chunky metal zipper adds a rugged, high-quality industrial contrast.

• Internal Wind Flap: A strip of matching fabric behind the zipper to block wind and prevent the fleece from getting caught in the zipper teeth.

4. Advanced Seam Work

• Vertical Panel Stitching: Notice the two vertical seams running down the front in the design. These provide a more tailored, “slim” appearance, which is important because fleece can sometimes look bulky.

• Reinforced Neck Tape: A herringbone or satin tape inside the back of the neck to maintain the shape of the collar and provide a professional finish.

5. Fabric & Interior

• Anti-Pilling Finish: High-quality fleece should be treated to prevent “bobbles” after washing, keeping the jacket looking new.

• Contrast Lining: Using a smooth taffeta or mesh lining inside the sleeves makes it much easier to slide the jacket on over other clothes.
